Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the two (Armed vs. Unarmed)? 


  • Unarmed: An unarmed security officer/courier means any person who performs the functions of observation, detection, reporting, or notification of appropriate authorities or designated agents regarding persons or property on the premises that individual is contracted to protect, and who does not carry or have access to a firearm in the performance of their duties.


  • Armed: Armed security officers are any person who  performs the basic functions of unarmed security officer, but has obtained additional licensure and credentials to handle and operate a firearm to perform protective preventative detail while inn service.


How often, if ever, do I have to renew my certification(s)? 

Firearms Endorsement certification must be renewed annually (every 12 months).

How old do I have to be to become a security officer? 

Unarmed security guards working in the state of Virginia must be at least 18 years old.


Do I have to have a clean record to be an unarmed security officer? 

Individuals convicted or found guilty of a felony or misdemeanor (not to include minor traffic violations) in Virginia or any other jurisdiction to include military court martial or currently under protective orders must submit a Criminal History Supplemental Form. Individuals who meet limited circumstances may apply.


How long does each course take to complete? 

MTSA coursework varies. The average length is 2-days and ranges from 4-18 classroom hours. 


Do MSTA courses and training meet statewide requirements to obtain an unarmed security guard license in Virginia? 

Yes. We are an accredited training facility. Please see our active status here.
